WEATHER—UNOFFICIAL

Bois Blanc Island Airport (6Y1)

The Bois Blanc Island Airport (6Y1) sits at an elevation of 664 feet in the Straits of Mackinac on Lake Huron, southeast of Mackinac Island and north of Cheboygan, just 3 miles Northwest of Pointe Aux Pins on Bois Blanc Island, Michigan. The island is approximately 12 miles long and 6 miles wide with 6 inland lakes. Much of the island is state-owned forest lands.

With 3,498 x 75 feet of paved asphalt, lighted runways 10 and 28 provide vital lifelines for year-round and seasonal island residents and visitors, especially during the winter months when the ferry doesn’t run from Cheboygan. Major commercial airlines do not land here.

From May through November, Plaunt Transportation provides passenger, freight, personal and commercial vehicle ferry service from Cheboygan, while the BBI Airport provides private and charter plane access to the island year-round. There are no paved roads on the island, but the maintained county gravel road extends from the northeast corner to the western end of the island.

There are no courtesy bicycles or cars available for use at the airport. There is no Uber or Lyft service on the island. However, Boblo Island Rentals has Side-by-Sides and Snowmobiles for rent, and they will deliver to and pick up from the airport. Boblo Style has bicycles for rent which they will also deliver to and pick up from the airport. Additionally, BBI Island Services is available for on-island transportation needs. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Services available for visitors to the island are quite limited. From May through November, the The Outpost, located 4 miles from the airport, offers limited dine-in options (sometimes lunch and dinner; at other times dinner only depending day of week and time of season) and has a limited array of grocery and other staple items available for sale. The Island Tavern is located 7 miles from the airport, and offers lunch and dinner. The Hideaway provides year-round bed and breakfast services and is 6 miles from the airport. Other island homes are available for rent (BBI Rentals).

If you can’t live without something, bring it with you—there are no guarantees you will find what you need on the island!

Information for Pilots

  • Pilots have 24/7 code access to the unattended heated terminal building. Overnight stays in the terminal building are only permitted in the Pilot Lounge, and only when weather or mechanical issues prevent safe departure from the island. If an overnight stay is otherwise desired, the airport campground area must be used.

WiFi, smart TV, self-serve coffee, a mini fridge, microwave, seating area, restroom, and a small pilot lounge with a futon are available. There is no shower, and no laundry facilities.

During the winter months, pilots are advised to contact the Snowplow Operator or Airport Manager to verify runway conditions.

Local calls can be made from a courtesy phone located in the terminal breezeway. A first-aid kit, and an AED are also available.

Airplane tie-down kits are available in the pilot’s lounge. Pilots may park their aircraft in the grass around the terminal apron only. Please do not park or tie-down your airplane at any other location.

There are no takeoff, landing, or tie-down fees. There is no mechanic or fuel on site.

There are no courtesy bicycles or vehicles available for use. Please see Island Resourcespage for more information.
